ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Join me for an immersive and fun two days of learning, as I openly share with you everything I know about the art of photography. As a small group, we will be focusing on the subjects of food, interior and travel photography and will be digging deep into the world of of light, composition, storytelling, post processing, industry insight and so much more. The workshop will be part theory and part practical, with plenty of time to play and photograph our weekend together.

Owner of The Bowmont and our special guest teacher, Michelle Crawford, will be taking the floor for a session during the workshop to share how she styles both food and interiors for photo shoots. We will also demonstrate how a stylist and photographer work together on a shoot.

Over the two days, Michelle will be spoiling us with her delicious cooking featuring the very best of Tassie’s local autumn produce. We will also have free rein of Michelle’s beautiful historic and character filled home, The Bowmont, where we can explore and photograph, and wander outside to the beautiful river front location.

After two days together, you will go home with an abundance of photography knowledge, the ability to shoot your camera on manual settings, the confidence to approach and capture a scene using natural light, and inspiration to photograph, curate and share your own stories through imagery. Two full days means so much to cover, and I can’t wait to share everything I know and love about photography with you! I am an open book and want you to go home with loads of information and value - so bring your questions and I will give you all my answers!

TOPICS WE WILL BE COVERING:

Natural light digital photography 101
We’ll dig into photography and camera basics, and why it’s important that you understand them. You’ll walk away with a thorough understanding of the (magical!) exposure triangle and be able to use your camera’s manual settings - including a suggestion of my favourite go to’s - to help you confidently capture a number of different subjects and styles. For the professionals, I will share lots of my own tips and personal go to settings.

Light
Nothing gets me more excited than reading and embracing natural light. Autumn light in Tassie is extra special. We’ll explore light direction first, it’ll blow your mind. We’ll find light and shadow and all the ways they can both make a photograph sing. We’ll work with harsh light and soft light and learn how to manipulate the outcome of both. We’ll follow it around The Bowmont, and go hunting for it outside. I’ll share with you all my tips on light and bright photography along with the contrasting moody chiaroscuro style.

Composition
The way a photograph is framed can completely shift the way a subject is viewed. It’s a really fun game. We will play with lots of different perspectives, angles, and formulas.

Storytelling
No matter the subject, a story is always worth being told. We could spend the whole weekend on storytelling alone. I have a special formula, you’ll love it. I can’t wait to dig into this with you.

Interior Photography
Photographing interiors is a beautiful and fun process, and The Bowmont is the perfect place for us to learn. I’ll share all the tips I have for taking a photograph that helps to make an interior space look delicious and inviting. There will be plenty of room for everyone to take photos. I used to be a high school teacher. Everyone will get equal amounts of love.

Travel/Location Photography
This one makes my heart sing. It’s really all about sharing a genuine sense of place. We will go for a wander along the Huon River (The Bowmont’s front yard!) and in search of a Huon Valley apple orchard, and use our light and composition skills to capture transportive photographs. I should say weather pending, but as the Swede’s say, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. So bring a raincoat and your sense of adventure, just in case!

Post Production/Editing
I will step you through my editing flow, both on Lightroom and phone. We will cover basics, explore your style, exporting tricks, and develop your own preset.

Industry Chat
Let’s chat openly. The best type of industry chat. Marketing, pricing (actual numbers!), getting published, image licensing, editorial insights, creative inspiration etc, etc. This part is always juicy.

Q&A’s
I want to answer any and all of your questions. We will have plenty of time for questions throughout the workshop, and special allocated time toward the end of our second day.

TESTIMONIALS:

- This workshop was everything I needed and so much more! Lean was such an incredible teacher catering for all levels of photography and bringing such a wonderful group of people together! I walked away from the workshop feeling inspired, supported and with so much more knowledge. I also left with a new community which feels like family and I’m so grateful for it! After the two days I didn’t want to leave! - Kelsey Zafiridis @kelseyzafiridis.photography

- This course was an indulgent luxury for me, and a significant investment in my current chapter of life. Lean was cognisant of this, creating an experience that felt generous, whilst still understanding her own worth. Perhaps that is just a complicated way of saying I felt like it was good value for money! Lean seamlessly navigated a class of beginners and seasoned professionals - not an easy task by any stretch. Lean’s teaching is gentle and encouraging and she managed to guide without prescribing. The content was comprehensive and informative - I thought the breadth of content was great. But most of all Lean presented in a way that was vibrant and full of humour, which is obviously just a reflection on Lean as an individual - it is invigorating to be around passion, so thank you Lean for sharing this - Hannah Lewis @penguinpantry

- Lean is magic. Her workshops are packed with detail and yet somehow easily digestible. She makes difficult concepts accessible and so. damn. beautiful. But Lean’s workshops are so much more than just the content: the locations, the food, the styling, her guest teachers - every detail is so considered and beautiful and specially created to inspire. Lean’s genuine, natural and joyful energy is contagious, and she is unfailingly generous with her time, her knowledge, her experience, and her encouragement. The workshop was a significant investment for me at the time, but turned out to be worth every cent - the weekend I spent with Lean, her fabulous co-conspirators and my equally brilliant fellow attendees was an absolute highlight of my year. I think we're all still buzzing, six months later! You're in for a treat! Jane McCormack @janemccormack

-Where do I start in describing my experience of a Lean Timms workshop... words like generosity, wisdom, creativity, inspiring, absolute care, dedication to her craft and profession... whilst high praise, only touch the surface of the powerhouse that Lean is and the quality of what she presents. I attended her Autumn photography workshop this year (2023), and was so pleasantly surprised by the way she nurtured and held a large group of women to explore and develop in our photographic practice.  Next level.  Lean catered for a diverse group of skills in such a way that even the most seasoned photographer is humbled by the simplicity and grace in which she works.  Whether you are looking to start your journey with photography, deepen your understanding or be inspired by a different perspective, Lean Timms workshops are the bomb! Jennene Greenall @jennenegreenall_photographer

-Lean is a wonderfully generous teacher (and all-round lovely human!). I left her workshop creatively buzzing and in the possession of so much more photography and industry knowledge. Couldn't recommend it more! Tilly Pamment @tillys_table

-Lean’s approach to teaching photography is a breath of fresh air. She has a knack for breaking down the scary bits into something you can actually get excited about. Camera settings, composition, lighting – she broke it down to the basics and put it into everyday context, which really helped me translate these skills to my own work. Aside from everything that we learnt, Lean as a person is incredibly kind, patient, and genuinely invested in seeing everyone grow. She was so open about the industry and really encouraged everyone to try new things. It felt more like hanging out with a super knowledgeable friend for a weekend rather than sitting in a workshop. ABOUT THE OPTIONAL EXCURSION DAY TO SATELLITE ISLAND

In the heart of the magnificent D'Entrecasteaux Channel, lies a small island of immense beauty. Satellite Island remains utterly unspoilt. With 360° views of this southern hemisphere wilderness—a mix of beautiful native bush, ancient blue gums, sheer sea cliffs, pebble beaches and sunny coves—Satellite Island is a secluded secret hideaway, yours to explore for one very special day.

The one day excursion to the island will be the perfect opportunity to apply your workshop learned photography skills and go to town with your camera. There will be ample opportunity to document all the beauty of the island, a place that perfectly compliments storytelling, travel, food, interior and lifestyle photography.

As a small group we will travel on the ferry from Kettering across to Bruny Island, where we will then be picked up by boat in the little seaside village of Alonnah. A short 10 minute boat ride across the Channel will bring us the Boathouse on the water’s edge at Satellite Island. From there will have time to explore, soak in and photograph the island before gathering to enjoy an indulgent long lunch by the one and only Analiese Gregory, our own private chef for the day. Think freshly caught seafood and the very best seasonal southern Tasmania produce, cooked over coals, paired with a mix of natural wines. After lunch we will have time to do as much or as little as we want to - a walk along the rock shelf; a swim in the ocean; learning to shuck wild oysters straight from the sea; watching the autumn light dance and begin to set across the Southern Ocean; a wander to Last Glimpse Point to hear the pacific gulls; or simply finding a spot by the water’s edge to take in the sound of the sea and the Tasmanian wilderness. Our day will end with a boat ride back to Bruny, to catch the ferry back to Kettering.

ABOUT ANALIESE GREGORY - OUR PRIVATE CHEF ON SATELLITE ISLAND:
