Cuba. Ohhh, Cuba. The place that found me. A place I was desperately needing but didn’t realise I needed until I’d lost all sense of direction and found myself wandering among crumbling Habana Vieja façade's, many a stray cat and the passing fumes of 1950’s Chevrolets. It’s the place that slowed me right down, filled me with freedom and let me just be. Very little internet and no mobile reception meant that I put my phone away. It meant diving back into old school problem solving. It meant lining up to book taxi’s, memorising street directions and making plans to be somewhere and committing to them. I took in my surroundings, wrote with a pen, handled cash only and drank every mojito I met. I talked to strangers, asked for directions, heard endless stories and shared my own. Long steamy days turned into steamy Havana nights - hidden rooftops, back alley way bars and salsa, salsa, salsa. I travelled solo here, but never was I alone. Either happily in my own company, or happily among the kind and generous people of this once upon a place.
Thinking about visiting? Do it. And hurry hurry. Oh the times they are a changing.
